Learn The Basics

I break down the basics in 3 Progressions that build on each other!

Selecting The Right Yarn

Picking the right yarn for a project is important, but when you’re just learning to crochet, pick something beginner friendly to practice with. You might be tempted to buy that trendy blanket yarn or something furry, but I recommend you stay away from those.

Yarn Fibers

Yarn is usually made by spinning multiple strands of fibers together, like a rope, and it can pull apart making your crochet experience less desirable. Yarns made from acrylic are usually spun tight so it shouldn’t pull apart easily. They are common and usually a less expensive option.

Yarn Colors

A neutral color yarn will be easy on the eyes and help you see how the yarn gets wrapped around your hook and itself to make each stitch. Learning what each stitch looks like will come in handy later.

Yarn Thickness

Picking a yarn in a medium thickness will also help you see what you’re doing. You might see this listed as “weight 4”, “worsted weight”, 5.5mm to 6.5mm, or “10 ply”. You can find all this information on the yarn label. Once you have some yarn, you need a crochet hook.

Selecting Your Crochet Hook

When you are learning to crochet and need a crochet hook, don’t think about what brand to choose from. Instead consider the material, size, and style. When choosing your first crochet hook, just remember this is just to get started and as you gain more experience, you’ll learn more about what features you prefer in your next hook.

Material of Crochet Hooks

These days crochet hooks are made from all kinds of materials. I like aluminum because the acrylic yarn I usually crochet with just glides around the hook. For now select a crochet hook that fits your budget.

Size of Crochet Hooks

Crochet hooks are measured based on the circumference of the shaft. This is where the yarn will loop around the hook to create your stitches. The size you choose usually depends on the recommended hook size on the yarn label you choose.

Style of Crochet Hooks

Some hooks are made to be more comfortable in your hand as you crochet but I think it’s more important to look at the shape of the head or tip of the crochet hook. I like to choose hooks that have a bit of a point because it helps me get into stitches.

These additional tools are optional but I have found them to be necessary.
I don’t start a project without them!

Stitch Markers

These little markers can you help identify key stitches or just keep your work from unraveling when you need to take a break. Stitch markers are essential when crocheting in continuous rounds. They will help you see when a round is completed.

Row Counters

Crochet projects are made by working in rows or rounds. Either way, you need to keep track of how many you have completed, and row counters will help you do just that. You can get a manual or digital row counter.

Weaving Needles

No matter what crochet project you make, you will always have a yarn tail to weave in and weaving needles are the best at doing this. Weaving needles also help you sew amigurumi pieces together and come in different sizes to accommodate the yarn of your project.

Measuring Tape

Checking your gauge before starting a crochet project is really important, and you can’t check your gauge without a measuring tape. You could get a ruler but a retractable measuring tape is easier to store inside your project bag.

Master The Basics One Skill At A Time

Follow these progressions to master and build a strong foundation by learning crochet stitches and techniques in a structured, easy-to-follow order.
