Beginner Basics: Stitch Progression 1
There are 4 skills in this first progression and each one forms the foundation of how I learned to crochet.

Slip Knot
The slip knot looks like a tiny ball, but it’s more like an adjustable loop that fits around your crochet hook. Crochet patterns don’t include instructions for making one. So it’s something all crocheters need to know.
Chain Stitch
You can only make a chain stitch after you’ve made a slip knot. When more than one of these stitches are made, they form a foundation chain. This group of chain stitches is usually the start to making many crochet items.

Single Crochet
This tight stitch can be used to form a flat fabric or 3D shapes as seen in amigurumi. To begin crocheting this stitch, you usually need to make a foundation chain or magic ring first.
Crochet In Rows
Crocheting in rows means crocheting back and forth across a foundation chain to form a flat fabric of any size. This is more of a skill and not so much a type of stitch. You can crochet in rows using any stitch or a combination of stitches.
